Collection Historical Note

The first Sunday school began in 1874 on Plainfield Street and it's first worship service was held in the office of Wason Manufacturing Company same year. In 1975, the services wee moved tp Plainfield Streer Schoolhouse. The church was built at the corner of  Wason and Birnie Avenues, in 1879. The society was organised in 1887 under the name of Brightwood Union Evangelical Church. The church was built and dedicated in 1902 and the name was changed to St. James Methodist Church.

In 1933, the church flooded many people were displaced and temporarily did not have a place of worship. It was renovated same year.
