At the time The John Birch Society: Anatomy of a Protest was published in 1964, J. Allen Broyles was minister of the First Methodist Church in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He stated in the "Author's Note" that the book was a revision of his doctoral dissertation at Boston University.
