Title: ME - West Durham - UMC, 1881-2002

Administrative/Biographical History
Methodist first came to Durham in 1802. In 1804, the meeting house was built. In 1806, the Durham Circuit was formed to include Pownal, Danville, Freeport, Lisbon, Litchfield, and Wales. The Durham and Pownal Methodist was then incorporated in 1810. Durham was not set off as a separate charge until 1849.
At the time of incorporation, the neighbourhood in the vicinity became known as "Methodist Corner", a name it held until 1900's. In 1953, a plague was given to the church by New England Historical Society recognizing it as the second oldest building in New England still in use as a church. In 1977, it was designated a historic site by Maine Annual Conference.
